ABOUT ME, AXELLE DOUILLET

Itchy feet or home-bird? I would definitely tick the first box. I arrived in London at the age of 19 with the ambition to fulfil my dreams and of course, to improve my English within a year…Twenty odd years have now passed leaving a wonder what percentage of Britishness I secretly hold in my heart!

After few years settling in London, I wanted to register for a Bachelor of Arts in Translation at the University of Roehampton. To my surprise was the only one degree I wanted to do was solely with French, Spanish, but not German. I could not speak a word of Spanish! The challenge was huge but I was up for it and packed my bags once again to study Spanish in Barcelona for four months, doing an intensive full-time crash course, immersing myself with only Spaniards… I decided to take the risk and believe me, I only wanted to share a flat with native Spanish people so to only speak Spanish. It finally paid off and the following year I was able to enrol in 2005 for a BA in Translation with French and Spanish. “Impossible n’est pas français” Napoléon once said translating to Impossible isn’t French which is one of mottos in life.

With the confidence of learning another language and completing my BA in Translation, I began the start of my Teaching career at the prestigious North London Collegiate School for girls as a French conversation Teacher. It was a colourful period to be working among experts who value and nurture girls’ education to very high standards since 1850. Following, I then graduated in 2016 with my PGCE in languages at Goldsmiths University. Since then, I have been teaching French and Spanish in secondary schools in London ranging from mainstream schools, international schools and selective schools (grammar schools). Most of the schools where I taught included the IB programme, which I particularly relate to in my own teaching. I love students to be self-driven, risk-takers and well-rounded so they can embrace and grow into their lives confidently.

It is clear that the education of teenagers is of utmost importance to Axelle. She is highly professional, very organised, calm and patient. My son had the privilege to be her pupil. When he began Secondary school, he did not know anything about French and after two years he would not shy away from speaking to native French people. My son thinks back fondly of Axelle’s inspirational classes. He recently received a grade 9 in French GCSE this year. Her lessons go beyond the target language: we can also feel her passion talking about several aspects of the francophone world.
She is an excellent teacher and I strongly encourage parents to get in touch with Axelle if either you child needs extra help or needs to be challenged in French.
